Vipeksha Gupta: Folds and Jhanas

The subject of my work could be thought as a combination of contemplation of impermanence and an insight into the true nature of reality.

Fold Series

The new series ‘FOLDS’ speaks of the theme of flux and impermanence which the artist explored during pandemic. These works made under high pressure of multiple layers of charcoal and graphite etched with sharp lines of folds speak of exultation of victory. It is the subtle intervention on the monochromatic surface, like a crease compressed down and up on a tight sheet of time.

Jhanas Series

Jhanas (infinite stages of consciousness’s), are distinguished stages in the shift of attention from the outer world. One experiences detachment from the external world and senses a consciousness of joy and ease, and reaches a zone where concentration surpasses reasoning through investigation of impermanency. Equanimity is attained by the acceptance of the passing away of joy and ease bringing about a state of pure ‘self-possession’. Its attainment, which is transitory, is followed by realization of the infinite space of consciousness, infinite cognition of consciousness, awareness of nihilism, and consciousness of unreality as the object of thought.
