Expanded (exdraw p): A Brief Blog History; 2008-Present

My interest in non-traditional drawing began in an undergraduate course called Experimental Drawing and continued there after. Expanded (exdraw p) is dedicated to presenting diverse drawing practices happening around the region that I live, Baltimore/Washington D.C.; country, and world. The blog adopted an abbreviated name from the word expanded (and its former name) to reflect the fragmented nature of so many practices. It is a framework for consideration of what a drawing can be.

Historically, drawings were made to plan a painting or sculpture. Over time, particularity in the 1990's, drawing emerged as a artform in and of itself. Exhibitions and organizations started focusing on contemporary drawing.

While the artists on Expanded (exdraw p) often contrast each other, their core is the same. They all work non-traditionally and push the boundaries of how to see and experience drawing. Artists who have participated typically work in or with 3D/installation, systems, process, technology, and mark making. Artist's philosophical and conceptual interests are eclectic and often combined in the most unusual ways. Drawing in its expanded form is not limited to carry on one tradition. Because of its mutable nature it can encompass multiple. It gives artists an open platform to conceptualize their work because they are not committed to one medium or style.

Thank you to all the participants on Expanded who do this and have shared their efforts.
